U.S. 98 eastbound traffic shift planned for Okaloosa County

Chipley- The U.S. 98 eastbound travel lanes between the western boundary of Henderson Beach State Park and Matthew Boulevard will be shifted to the south the week of Sunday, Sept. 8.
The traffic shift will provide the needed space to construct the new median, turn lanes, and inside east and westbound travel lanes. During this phase of construction low-profile barrier wall will be placed in the median and the following restrictions will be in place:
  • Drivers will only be allowed to cross the median at Henderson Beach Road and the Home Depot access road intersections.
  • Only right turns will be allowed at all other locations.
  • U.S. 98 eastbound traffic will access Triumph Drive via Indian Bayou Trail/Commons Drive detour, and the Triumph Drive traffic signal will be placed in a "flashing yellow" mode.
Additionally, the new traffic signal installed at the U.S. 98-Indian Bayou Trail/Restaurant Row intersection will be activated the week of Sunday, Sept. 8.
The new traffic configuration will remain in place through early 2020.
This section of U.S. 98 is the focus of a $33.5 million construction project that is widening the highway from four to six travel lanes between Airport Road and the Okaloosa/Walton county line.  Project completion is currently estimated for early 2021.
All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or re-scheduled in the event of inclement weather. Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through a work zone and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
