Full job description
Position Summary:
Crime Prevention Specialists are civilian, non-sworn employees of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office that work in coordination with the Crime Prevention Supervisor to organize and maintain crime prevention programs; to educate the public in the techniques of crime prevention, and perform other related work as required.
Qualifications:
Specialist I:
· Education – High school diploma or GED equivalent
· Experience – Two (2) years related experience
*Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required competencies to perform the job.
· Must be at least 21 years of age
· Valid Driver License
· Certifications – Must attend and successfully complete Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training and obtain Advanced Practitioner title.
· Preferred – Prior Law Enforcement experience
Specialist II:
· Education – Associate degree in related field
· Experience – Three (3) years related experience
*Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required competencies to perform the job.
· Must be at least 21 years of age
· Valid Driver License
· Certifications – Must attend and successfully complete Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training and obtain Advanced Practitioner title.
· Preferred – Prior Law Enforcement experience
Essential Job Functions:

· Regular and prompt job attendance.
· Updates and maintains a database of existing community groups/areas, including contact persons
· Coordinates arrangements of and conducts public speaking/safety awareness presentations to community groups, schools, business, and organizations.
· Prepares training modules for specific presentation topics
· Plans for and conducts public information and media efforts to support program objectives in crime prevention topics/activities
· Conducts presentations to educate the public to recognize and report suspicious activities and crimes
· Conducts security/CPTED surveys to residents, schools, and businesses and suggest ways to make residential/commercial properties and schools more secure
· May work with other county departments, commercial and residential developers to analyze and address efficient and environmentally consistent safety concerns to review residential/commercial building proposals and blueprints and submit safety and security recommendations per the standards of the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)
· Researches, compiles and analyzes criminal data reports for trends and patterns by utilizing the Records Management System (RMS) or Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD).
· Composes crime prevention newsletters, articles, press releases, and posts current safety information on the Public Information Officers Review and department website. Utilizes the social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to publicize department activity. Assist our PIO in the preparation of information throughout all the agency’s social media posts.
· Establishes and maintains contact with public service, volunteer and professional organizations that support department crime prevention programs
· Coordinates, participates, and schedules staff to attend special events to promote community awareness
· Orders and inventories community event supplies
· Other duties as assigned
Required Skills:
· Effectively communicate orally to conduct training sessions, workshops and/or make presentations to large groups of people
· Effectively communicate in writing to prepare newsletters, articles, press releases, public service announcements, CPTED surveys and postings on social media platforms
· Read and interpret written reports to draw conclusions and develop courses of action for implementation of meeting project goals
· Operate computer systems and programs to include Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoints in order to input data, produce output, and analyze data for various projects
· Produce graphic designs, brochures and other material for training programs, presentations, and public media requirements
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including all levels of County employees, public officials, government agency representatives, law enforcement officials, community and business leaders and members of the public
· Exercise independent judgement and work with minimum supervision
Key Competencies:
· Knowledge of National and state-level community crime prevention programs such as: Operation I.D, National Crime Prevention Council/McGruff/Ad Council, Florida Crime Prevention Association, and Homeland Security
· Experience with various types of public media resources, such as newsletters, public service announcements, websites, electronic and social media platforms
· Familiar with safety and security concerns of special interest groups such as children, teens, the elderly, etc. and the different ways they are victimized
· Understanding of Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS)
· Good research techniques, methods, and procedures
Physical Requirements:
· General Mobility – ability to sit or stand for extended periods, walking within the office, facility or other venues, ability to bend body forward at the waist, ability to set up tables, canopies, and other equipment related to community events.
· Manual Dexterity – frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment, ability to reach with arms.
· Visual and Auditory Requirements – ability to read documents, emails, and computer screens, hearing and speaking ability to communicate effectively in person during events and speaking with groups and individuals, over the phone, and in virtual meetings.
· Lifting and Carrying – occasionally lift or carry items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
· Travel – able to travel to attend community events and network with community leaders.
